Capel Sul: History
The property was originally built in 1862 by architect and former mayor of Kidwelly – Thomas W Angel Evans. The property was built as a residential building and has a unique and well documented history. During this time the property become known as Rumsey House and was home to former solicitor Harold Greenwood and his wife Mabel.
Harold and Mabel have an interesting story of their own…
Between 1924-1926 an independent and established congregation known as Capel Sul converted the house to a chapel. The congregation held their last service at Capel Sul on the 16.07.2017. Over the years Capel Sul had many purposes, being used as a Soup Kitchen in 1926, and a health clinic during the 2nd World War. Along with being a regular place of worship, many shows, fates, concerts and special occasions were held at Capel Sul, it was the heart of the local community and we cannot wait to make it a part of this town again.
Capel Sul: Future
Planning has been approved for our proposed developments of Capel Sul and maintenance work has began.
Reflect Education plan to restore the building to use as a multipurpose facility providing accommodation for an activity centre which will include rebound therapy equipment, coffee shop and function room.
The facility will be welcome to the local community and will be beneficial to our services. It will encourage and develop vocational skills for the young people that we are involved with and encourage employment opportunities throughout the town.
We’d love to hear your stories about Capel Sul and its extensive history!
